To understand the state of men in this country, it’s necessary to know three things. First, millions of men are falling behind women academically and suffering from a lack of meaning and purpose. Second, there is no consensus whatsoever on whether there’s a problem, much less how to respond and pull millions of men back from the brink. Third, many men are filling the void themselves by turning to gurus to guide their lives. They’re turning to Andrew Tate, Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson and a host of others — including Elon Musk and Tucker Carlson — to show them the way.

But the 32-year-old, who has 2.1 million Instagram followers, had no idea he’d come to be idolized by a subset of teenage boys and young men known as looksmaxxers . There's an ideological gap widening between Gen Z's young men and women. Half of young men also believe they face some kind of discrimination, and less than half identify as feminists. Sharing the data, journalist and lawyer Imani Gandy commented on the pattern, saying: "YouTube algorithms are turning young men into sociopaths." "Women are going to rise up and women are going to take over everything and feminism is awful and women hate us," Stein said. "If you're being rewarded by the algorithm and by the platform you're creating on, you're going to probably keep doing it," she said.

"Looksmaxxing" is the Tiktok trend taking hold among some young men who want to be better-looking. The New York Times wrote about the trend, which has shifted from a friendlier version on Tiktok, where handsome men give basic advice. The story points out that much of the TikTok version of the trend is simply helpful, basic advice, and the target audience is often young teenage men — a demographic that can be hygienically challenged. Calling these basic tips "looksmaxxing" — and treating it like getting "facial gains" — is silly. But this is the first time we're seeing swaths of young men gathering online to talk about it with these meme-y terms like "mogging" (looking hotter than someone else).

[1/5] Cast members Adrien Brody, Odessa Young, Jesse Eisenberg and director John Trengove attend a photo call to promote the movie 'Manodrome'' at the 73rd Berlinale International Film Festival in Berlin, Germany, February 18, 2023. The film, which premieres at the Berlin Film Festival on Saturday, explores the "manosphere" of online toxic masculinity that bubbled up into the mainstream after a series of mass killings by "incels" - the self-described "involuntary celibates" - in the 2010s. They eventually win Ralphie as a new adherent to their cult and initiate him by branding him with their symbol. "It really became this idea of a character who just immerses himself in a world of men. And it all kind of leads to a sort of madness, a kind of a fever dream," Trengove told the premiere's audience.
Twitter owner Elon Musk has reinstated several controversial accounts, including Kanye West's. But West called him out for not reinstating conspiracy theorist Alex Jones' account. Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, said he has an "issue" with Musk for not reinstating InfoWars host Alex Jones, according to a 30-second video clip with watermarks that read "@Ali" and "BANNED.VIDEO." West continued: "Alex Jones is a Christian. But Musk has not budged on reinstating right-wing conspiracy theorist and Sandy Hook denier Alex Jones, even quoting Matthew 19:14, a bible verse, in a tweet referencing him.
Since Elon Musk took over Twitter, promising to uphold free speech, some accounts were reinstated. Some accounts previously banned or suspended have been revived, but in typical Musk fashion, the reinstatements haven't come without controversy. After 51% of respondents voted "yes," the billionaire owner restored Trump's Twitter account the next day. After five years, his Twitter account was reinstated. After being suspended, Peterson filmed a nearly 15-minute long YouTube video, saying he would rather die than delete the hateful tweet.
